Math Game!

Yesterday we played a game called Number Line Squeeze. Students had a number line from 100 to 120. Students took turns writing down the secret number and telling their partner if the secret number was greater than or less than the number that their partner guessed. Students used  game pieces to narrow down the number choices and squeeze their way to the secret number. They had fun playing this game!

Stop and Jot

Today during reading workshop we learned the strategy of stop and jot. This helps students think while reading and make connections to what they are reading. We use post it notes to draw simple smile faces ( happy parts of story), frown faces (sad parts) questions marks ( I wonder why....) and exclamation points ( exiting part of story) to show our thinking during reading.  Students did a wonderful job with this and shared their stop and jots with a friend after they were finished reading.

There is no A in They!

Today we learned that although the word they sounds like it has an "A" in it, we do not spell it with an A. We used this fun poem from our Rebecca Sitton spelling program to help us remember how to spell they.

We finished our NWEA tests!

Today we finished our NWEA tests and celebrated by playing the mystery bag game. Students had to ask questions to help them guess what was in the mystery bag. After some great questions, students were able to guess what was in the bag ---- SMARTIES candy! Because we tried so hard on our tests and we are all so SMART!

Reading Workshop

We have been hard at work this week during our reading workshop. Students have been practicing their reading stamina. Yesterday, we read for 5 mins. and today we read for 10 mins. We only count the minuets that are quality minuets with the entire class on task and reading. By the end of the year, we want to be reading for at least 50 mins. at a time during our reading workshop.

Weekly Homework

Weekly homework starts this week. Students are asked to complete four of the "bingo" square task to earn full credit. If your child wishes to complete more they are welcome to. This system allows all learners to be successful with homework and develop great homework habits.

3 Ways to read

Today we discussed the three ways in which we can read: read the pictures, read the words, and retell the story. Students worked with one another to practice reading in each of these ways. It was a lot of fun!

Our Class Promise

This week we discussed our class expectations. We brainstormed some rules we know about school and condensed them into three simple guidelines: Be Safe, be ready, and be respectful. We called it our class promise and signed it showing that we promise to do all three things.

Today, we drew pictures of our faces to add to the Our Promise poster to personalize and it and remind us that we all promised each other that we will be safe, ready and respectful at school.

Proud of their face drawings!
